PhD Candidate Sociology
University of Toronto
I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto. My areas of interest include student activism, gender, qualitative methodology, political sociology, and race and colonization. I have done research on far right extremism in Canada and the mainstreaming of far right in formal politics both in Canada and the United States. I am a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Joseph Bombardier Scholar.
Currently, I am doing research on youth activism in Canada and the United States.
Scholars have noted a significant rise in youth involvement in political and social issues and organizations in the past five years. We have also seen a rise in on the ground protests and rallies since 2015 in both Canada and the United States. How do young people choose to get involved in these movements? My research seeks to unpack this question.
I have published research in Canadian Review of Sociology, Current Sociology, Men and Masculinities, New Media & Society, Postcolonial Studies, Journal of Critical Race Inquiry and in the edited collection Gendering Globalization, Globalizing Gender: Postcolonial Perspectives and the edited collection The Ethics of Researching the Far Right
I have independently taught five courses at the University of Toronto across the field of sociology, Introduction to Sociology- Social Inquiries, Social Movements (I have taught this course twice), Social Inequality, and Race and Ethnicity in Canada. All my courses are concerned with teaching students critical thinking, questioning power structures and are student driven.
For the past three years, I have assisted in teaching core research methods modules including introduction of qualitative analysis and intermediate qualitative analysis at the University of Toronto. For these research methods modules, I led skills-based tutorials that teach students across methodological backgrounds how to conduct discourse analysis, thematic analysis, participant observation, ethnography, interviews, transcribe, code and analyse data. Additionally, I have held 22 teaching assistant positions in courses such as political sociology, crime and deviance, gender, and a range of research methods.
I have been featured discussing my research on various media outlets such as TVO, CTV, Global News, Toronto Star and Toronto Radio. I am currently listed as an expert on far-right extremism for the University of Toronto's Blue Book of Media Experts
